Finally some progress

Ike finally got some much needed attention this weekend. With the weather finally cooperating and the wind down to a reasonable level, I was able to get a few more parts pulled off. After moving the Jeep around in the garage to get a little more wiggle room, I was able to get the rear drive shaft removed. I was hoping I’d be able to pull apart the parking break as well before moving to the front drive shaft, but the flange nut on the output shaft foiled me. Even after removing the huge cotter pin, my air impact wrench at 100 psi was still unable to get it to budge. Fortunately, I’ve ordered some fantastic penetrating oil, so hopefully on my long weekend next week I’ll be able to get the actual transfer case removed.

After being so totally defeated, I decided to move on and put together my engine stand. Hopefully before too long I’ll be able to make that shiny new engine stand actually do its job holding Ike’s engine while I wait for the time and funds for a rebuild. Along with the new engine stand, I borrowed an engine hoist from my dad in preparation for removing all the heavy bits. Next steps are to get the engine stripped down and the transfer case, transmission, bell housing, and clutch removed. Hopefully I’ll get a good amount of that removed this coming weekend.

One step at a time. I got a really nice Inger Rolls air impact if you want to give that a try.

If I can’t get these head nuts off after soaking them with my penetrating oil, I’ll certainly take you up on that. The one I have just doesn’t have enough torque I think.
